Daily Random Word Doodles - Part 20

An exciting news for those who live in Canada, especially Toronto!

I’ve been invited to include Random Daily Doodles images as a part of Art in Transit. You may see my work in the shopping mall’s screen throughout February 2013 and on Toronto Subway’s screen throughout March 2013. :) Would love to hear if you managed to see one. Really honoured to be part of this.

Hey Charles great work and I also wanted to say thanks again for your art book! I won your art book in the random draw a few months back. I wanted to know your thoughts on style for character design. I want to go into visual development but I find that I cannot limit myself to one style. I like to use many different styles and pick my style based on the illustration/project. I notice that your style changes depending on the image too. I was wondering if you personally think this is a strong point for an artist that wants to get into vis dev for animation or do companies want to see someone with a very distinct style? I would appreciate your thoughts on my question, have a good day.

These are great, Sir. you just have no end to your imagination!

Not to hijack your blog, but tell Phill that studios look for an artist portfolio with a distinct style when hiring for vis dev, so they know exactly what they are getting. Once you are hired in-house then being versatile is what keeps you around. It's kinda backwards.

Phill: Listen to Ted! (Thanks, Ted!) :)

Of course there's no right an wrong answer to this.. just trust yourself (do more research too) and keep doing what you love doing & gain as many knowledge as you can.. that's important - I do believe 'style' will appear naturally with this.. not by trying to find it or mimic others (of course getting influences are part of growing). I'm living in a different country with a different way on how studio operates, so things that work here might not work in other places. but I hope this helps.

Ted: Thank you, sir! for the kind words and for answering Phill's question. You're awesome :D

@Ted and @ Charles Thanks a whole lot for chiming in and answering my question! I appreciated it. But putting together both of your answers along with Andreas Deja's, maybe it would be best to combine both strategies? Maybe build my portfolio with one style for most of it and add a few pieces here and there that show I am versatile. Thanks a lot to both of you for taking time to answer my question!
