Goodbye and Welcome

Hi all,
now.. this is a quite personal piece for me.. It started with a topic from Sketchoholic..'Ghosts' (Daniela Strijleva interview's contest). I was going to create something comedic before but all of sudden memories of my granma came back to me. She passed away quite a while ago but I still remember how devastated i was that time. I tried to pour all my emotion into this one.. which resulted in a really depressing weekend. It was really exhausting both mentally and physically when I did this drawing - the sad music that I listened was making it worse too. I'm glad to be able to finish it - it's quite a relieve in the end. I miss both my granpa and granma.. I wish that they're both in peace and happy somewhere .. sniff..

I put some symbolism in this piece too. It's subtle.. so some of you might see it and some of you might not.. but it's okay, it's all up to your interpretation in the end :)

Title:
Goodbye and Welcome
Medium: Pencil and Digital

Original pencil:

Live your life to the fullest, guys :)

Next post will be a happier one! I promise! :D

PS: Found out that I've won! I'm super stoked! Thank you to Daniela Strijleva and of course Bobby Chiu for hosting the event. I look forward to watching the interview video soon :)

This is touching and beautiful, Charles. I can relate to it so well... or at least I think I do, as these things are so personal, we all live them in different ways, except for the pain the loss leaves behind.
My grandma is still alive, but when my granpa passed, he left a hole in our lives.
I like the fact that you put her loved ones waiting for her on the other side, including pets.

Sorry to hear that but hey man, maybe you should make another one of her that would be more of a tribute to her life and impact she had on you?

Anyway, great drawing! You did a great job on keeping the colours at the right level for the mood of the piece, really nice work as always Charles!

A moving piece of work... I think we all hope that they get greeted by the others we loved at the other side :)

Beautifully done on a tough subject matter. Your soft pencils add to the sentiment & I adore that you've included pets in the picture too :)

Gaia: Thank you, Gaia. It is a really sensitive thing which we all have to deal with at one point in our life. :(

Jez Tuya: Thanks, dude! :D

Rod: Thx, Rod. She passed away quite a long time ago.. so I'm fine now :)

Brun: Thank you for the visit, man! Appreciate your kind words. :)

Erin: hehe yeah.. I put the pets to lighten the piece a bit :D Thanks a lot!

I think this is a very beautiful way to remember your grandma, it made me think of my two grandparents, how sad I felt and feel... sometimes when something happens. And how nice is the ray of light from thinking they are again with the ones they lost.
Thank you very much for sharing this piece of your soul, and make me think about my granpa's... bittersweet feeling.

Take care Charles.

This is so beautiful.. sad but beautiful. Like most people, I've been through the similar experience and I can feel your emotion through the piece. Really great illustration Charles :)

Nice piece, Charles. I still occasionally have the most peaceful dreams of being in my grandparents living room while they are still alive. You never truly appreciate something till it's gone. -Ted

You really put yourself out there for this piece Charles, and it's all the more wonderful for it. Your granma is smiling on you now. Take care, my friend.

Just beautiful! This is very inspiring as well. I love the mood, that, even though she's gone, she has a place to go and be happy. Powerful, simple, and whimsical. Gorgeous work!

Very touchy yet wondeful story at the same time. I'm sure your grndparents are in a better place and are in peace :)

The drawing is just awesome, man! Really captured the mood! I'm guessing that's your little brother standing?

Really touching image, there's a lot of emotion captured in those lines - so much so that my eyes watered up a little looking at it. A pleasure to visit as always!

Beautiful image. Reads so well. A great and, to me, surprising take on the theme, especially with it having just been Halloween. Feels warm and heartfelt, again a beautiful piece.

Wow, another great piece by Charles!
Really nice and actually I do feel your personal attachment to this which made the piece touching with sincerity.

I don't quite get "the symbolism" this time, though. Is it a drip injection stand looking a bit like a balance scale? Which also is looking like a cane/trident in a way held by a big male figure behind everyone to me.

Kay said...

oh geeze this one made me cry.. love this piece

Charles Santoso said...

Thank you so much, guys! your comments are really making me happy. :)

Patrick: Thank you so much! I guess it's not so much a symbolism hehe.. well.. for example: I've put the 'iv drips' hanger as a 'devider' between the living world and the ones who've passed away (in this composition). also the iv drips has one empty one and one still full one :P I love putting those 'hidden meaning' stuff in my work.. hehehe just to amuse myself most of the time :)

When I saw this piece in the interview I just loved it and hoped Daniela Strijleva would pick it: don't get me wrong the other entries were amazing but this one really spoke to me and touched me.
It's such a beautiful yet sad piece all in one, and anyone can tell a lot of love was put into it. I absolutely cannot say how much I love it. Brought tears to my eyes and absolutely wonderful storytelling.
